Month-In-Review // The January Thaw

Is it finally over?  *climbs out from under my blanket fort*

Did January feel as long and dreary and torturous for you as it did for me? Okay, maybe I'm overexaggerating a bit.  But, you guys.  The snow.

At first, I was really excited about Winter Storm Jonas, because snow.  I planned to just sit around drinking hot cocoa and catching up on my reading and doing some blogging.  But noooo -- Jonas had other plans.  I got very little snow and a bunch of ice.  So, while everyone else was out sledding and making snowmen, I was stuck with this hard, frozen sheet of slippery death.  Branches were falling everywhere from the weight of the ice, so of course, my power went out.  And then it came back on.  And then it went back out.  In total, I was out of power for about 20 hours.  I felt like I was living in the dark ages.  My family was going stir crazy and driving each other nuts and it was freezing and I felt completely disconnected from the rest of the world. So, in short: props to our ancestors because I couldn't even last a day without electricity.  I am so weak.

I'm really glad that Jonas is gone (and very upset that it didn't deliver any snow because I was so looking forward to making snow cream).  I hope you all stayed warm and enjoyed the snow days and read some good books!

Winter Storm Jonas aside, January wasn't all bad.  Here are the deets:

Books I Acquired

Zero.  None.  Nil.  I am on a serious book buying ban.  Of course, I'm still entering giveaways and receiving ARCs.  However, I am trying to save money so I am refraining from purchasing books.  Also, my TBR pile is huge and I need to put a dent in it before I even think about purchasing any other books.

What I Read & What I'm Reading

I am starting this year off well, I think (although Goodreads says I'm already two books behind schedule).  I'm doing a lot of undocumented reading outside of the Goodreads challenge, so I haven't had as much time to just read leisurely.  But, here are the books that I did pick up in January:

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to re-read any books for the 2016 Re-Read Challenge.  However, I do plan to play catch-up and do a bit of extra reading to meet my goal of 24 books re-read!

I am currently reading Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard.  Since I have it on my Kindle, I don't think that I actually realized how long this eARC is until I started reading.  I'm enjoying it so far, but it just feels like it's taking me forever to get through it.  However, I hope to have it finished sometime next week.  And, you can look out for my review on Fangirlish!

What I Watched

I've realized that I don't really watch movies like I used to.  I'm always binge-watching TV shows or trying to keep up with the shows that are currently airing.  But, in January, I got into a movie mood.  And, the one movie that I really want to talk about is Beyond the Lights.

Beyond the Lights is a beautiful story about a troubled pop-star and the police officer/would-be politician who saves her life after a suicide attempt.  It's a touching and adorable romance that you should definitely go watch (if you already haven't).  It's streaming on Netflix!  The movie stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw who is stunningly gorgeous (you may recognize her from Belle, which is my favorite movie) and Nate Parker.  You might recognize him, too!  He caused quite a stir at Sundance this past week with his film The Birth of a Nation.  These two actors are both incredibly talented and are walking the path of greatness.

Of course, some of my favorite shows came back this month.  Ya know, like Teen Wolf and The 100!  (And, honestly, I am very confused about what is happening on both of those shows right now.)

And, Shadowhunters premiered!  Let's be real for a moment -- I'm not loving Shadowhunters.  But, I'm not going to stop watching it either.  I love the casting (especially Jace, Alec, and Simon) and I'm curious to see what direction they're taking the story in.  However, I'm not loving all of the acting and the writing, and of course, the CGI effects.  But, I mean, the CGI in Supernatural was terrible in the beginning and look how that show has turned out.  This is the premiere season of Shadowhunters.  Premiere seasons suck sometimes.  I am willing to give the producers and the writers the chance to improve.  And, I'm always going to support Cassandra Clare's work, because her series is amazing and deserves its time to shine.

Crawling Back Under My Covers Now

  3. Did you get to make snowmen or were you lost in the dark like me?
  4. What are you looking forward to in February?
  5. What do you think about Shadowhunters?

Talk to you next month!

  1. Sorry about the ice. It got a little colder in Texas but we didn't get anything where I was. I wish I was like you and didn't get any books in January. I only got 2 books for Christmas (that's my justification) so I got way too many books/spent too much money at one time on books. Not sure if I mentioned this before but I really like the way you set up your wrap ups.

    1. Thanks for the compliment on my wrap up template/set up! Much appreciated. I WISH I'd gotten books in January, but money. :( So, I'm secretly envious of all of your January buys. (I watched your book hauls, by the way! Lot's of great picks!) I'm glad you survived Winter Storm Jonas!

    2. Sadly that's not even all of them. I still have books that I bought that I didn't get from Book Outlet. I'll probably post that in a couple weeks. Thanks for watching!
